Dr. Hugh Giffords
Hugh is a graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to his veterinary career, Dr Giffords served as a police officer with the NYPD and as a firefighter with the FDNY. He is motivated by compassion for those who can’t speak for themselves and is passionate in his belief that our four-legged friends receive the finest medical care possible. He has additional training in Small Animal Medicine from Kansas State University. Jack the Akita is his constant companion.
Dr. Lara Sosnow
Lara graduated cum laude from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. A Phoenix native, she previously worked for over 12 years in the Financial Services Industry after earning her MBA at New York University. She is happy to be back in the Valley of the Sun following her veterinary dream. At home, Lara has a noisy Plott Hound that keeps her up at night, a cylindrical mixed breed named Olivia, and a ch-ch-ch-chihuahua with lots of personality.
Dr. Kate Schwemer
Kate is a North Dakota native who joined the snowbirds by moving south to escape the cold winters. She moved into the veterinary field by working at two clinics in her hometown while obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Biology/Pre-Veterinary Studies at Concordia College. She left Fargo for Iowa to begin her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and graduated magna cum laude from Iowa State University in 2016.
In her free time Dr. Schwemer enjoys being outside and hiking the many trails around Phoenix. She also loves being home and spending time with her furry companions Fiona, Boom, Gustaf and Pastrami.
Dr. Kelsey Ozuk
Dr. Ozuk is a midwesterner, born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She received her bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from The Ohio State University, and then went on to graduate from tOSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ozuk is passionate about behavior counseling and medicine for both dogs and cats. She emphasizes low-stress handling for your pets during every visit, and encourages positive-reinforcement techniques in all aspects of animal care.
On her days off you can find Dr. Ozuk poolside with her two pitbulls, Rana and Dexter. She also shares her home with a hairless Guinea pig named Kreacher. Dr. Ozuk is an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy novels, a novice hiker, and a connoisseur of all things chocolate.
Dr. Gayle Bilsland
Gayle graduated in 1974 from Washington State University and has been in practice for over 30 years. Originally from Oregon, she moved to Phoenix in 1994 seeking a warmer climate in which to pursue outdoor activities. She is a dedicated triathlete and bicyclist. At home, Dr. Bilsland functions as chief slave and litter pan scooper for many formerly homeless and needy cats. One of her main joys is providing for every want, need and whim of a large clutter of completely spoiled felines.
Dr. Shanah Frankel
A born and raised native of Las Vegas, NV, Dr. Frankel decided to give “seasons” a try at The Ohio State University. Throughout her time in Ohio, she explored the wide world of animal care working for the Columbus Zoo, the USDA, a companion animal hospital and running tOSU Horsemen’s Association. After earning both her bachelor’s and veterinary medicine degrees from tOSU, she decided winters just weren’t for her, and returned back west for some very missed sunshine and family.
Desja, Vet Tech (CVT) & Office Manager
Desja joined The Phoenix Dog/Cat/Bird Hospital as a staff member in 1986 and is a Certified Vet Tech as well as our Office Manager. Desja can do ANYTHING...set a catheter in a 2 pound kitten, draw blood from a fractious chihuahua, fix the A/C unit, and do landscape design! She is the heart of Phoenix Dog Cat Bird.
Kayla, Vet Tech (CVT)
Kayla graduated from Anthem College where she passed the required tests to earn her certification. She enjoys working complicated cases with Dr. Giffords and helping the many different rescue organizations get situated with all their medical needs. At home Kayla has a full house with two dogs : Vienna aka Weiner and Choco aka Chocolatte, a congenitally deformed cat: Diavel, and a rescue rat named Jack.
Alison, Vet Tech
Alison graduated from Anthem College and is studying to sit for her boards to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. While working here she has become very proficient in professional dental care. She has 6 dogs and has a special soft spot for the dachshunds. Alison recently became engaged to her boyfriend and loves spending time with her step daughter. Alison loves to snack and is often the envy of the clinic for her metabolism.
Kim, Vet Tech
Kim recently graduated from veterinary assistant school and did so well in her externship that she was offered a full time position. She has excelled quickly and loves to work with the sickest of animals- offering lots of patient care. Outside of work she loves to hike and spend time with her husband and two babies Abbi (6yo) and Libby (3yo). Kim has 2 dogs Chloe and Lulu Floof as well as a cat Maggie.
Alma, Vet Tech
Alma recently graduated from a veterinary assistant program. She decided to become a vet assistant because she wanted to learn how to take care of her own animals as well as other animals that needed help. She currently has three dogs, Tiny, Dozer, and Cootie. Alma is also our after hours hairdresser.
Lena, Customer Care
Lena has two dogs at home - both Labrador-Pit mix male brothers - and they are her world! They are her little monsters and she loves them. She likes to help both people and animals so working in customer services at Phoenix Dog and Cat Hospital is the perfect job for her...and our clients love her!
Stephannie, Customer Care
Stephannie is married and has five fur babies of the canine variety. Her favorite book is Where the Red Fern Grows...her favorite movie is Old Yeller...yes, she's a total dog person! In her free time she likes to watch tv, listen to the radio and play with her dogs. She feels blessed to have a job that she loves.
